The first thing you need is to obtain a provisional driving licence.
To apply for this, you must complete an application form D1, available from Post Offices,
and send the completed form, with your fee, to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, Swansea.
They will return your provisional driving licence in the post within approximately three weeks.
It all depends on the individual, as everyone learns at different rates, how often you have lessons and whether you are able to practice in between lessons.
Lessons with Learn 2 Drive, cost £25 per single lesson or £235 for 10 lessons.
The Highway Code is a book that all prospective drivers should read. It contains a lot of
information about the rules and regulations of driving in this country, which of course, is your
responsibility to know.
The theory test is made up of two parts. The first multiple choice element gives you 35 randomly selected questions about subjects associated with driving. The pass mark for this element is 30 out of 35. The second part to the test is the Hazard Perception element. The computer will select 14 random video clips. One of theses clips will contain two hazards and the remaining 13 clips will all contain 1 hazard for you to identify. The sooner you identify a hazard the more you score, to a maximum of 5 points per hazard. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75 points.
After checking your driving licence and theory pass certificate, the first thing the examiner will do is to check your eyesight. This involves reading a number plate at a distance of 20 metres. Following successful completion of this, the examiner will then ask you two safety questions, which may involve you lifting the bonnet to identify something in the engine compartment. This is then followed by your driving ability part of the test. Throughout the entire test, you are only allowed 15 minor faults. If you unfortunately reach 16, or receive either a serious or dangerous driving fault, then you will fail the test.
On the day of your test, you must take your provisional driving licence, which includes both the photo card and the paper counterpart, and your theory pass certificate. Failure to bring these items could mean that the test is unable to continue and you would lose your fee.
You will need to send your provisional driving licence back to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, along with your fee of course, for them to issue you with a full driving licence.
